The Bangladesh Bank has initiated the establishment of a special fund amounting to Tk25 crore for the families of those who lost their lives and for the medical treatment of those injured during the mass uprising in July 2024.
The decision was reached during a meeting at the central bank today (8 July), as reported by sources familiar with the situation to The Business Standard.
Out of the total fund, Bangladesh Bank will allocate Tk14 crore from its own resources, while 11 selected banks will each contribute Tk1 crore.
According to sources, BB Governor Ahsan H Mansur led a meeting this afternoon with the managing directors of all commercial banks. Before this meeting, the governor had a separate discussion with the MDs of 11 banks that have demonstrated strong performance across various metrics. During that discussion, he encouraged them to each contribute Tk1 crore to the fund, which they agreed to do.
The banks involved will now seek approval from their respective boards prior to transferring the pledged funds to the central bank.
