BB stopped release new note for “Sheikh Mujib” image

B Mirror Report: the central bank is not releasing new note into the market before Eid on a plea that those notes carrying images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, sources involve currency department of Central Bank told Business Mirror, Tuesday.

The same source claimed that the Bangladesh Bank is publishing new notes bearing the spirit of “July Uprising” will be circulated by the end of May this year.

“Work is going on in the security printing press so that old notes carrying political leaders picture will be phased out from the market” the official said preferring anonymity

Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan said, “The new note design is preparing with  inspiration of the 2024 revolution, but there will be some delay in its release into the market.

Sensing a good demand and shortage of new currency notes a section of central bank and other bank officials are making fast cash from selling those to street currency vendors.

Bank officials in connivance with street vendors are selling a good amount of notes in the open market withdrawing those from their vault.

Currency vendors are claiming  Tk 800 to Tk 1200 extra for each bundle of hundred notes this year which were Tk 300 to Tk 400 hundred each previous years

“We don’t have do anything as we bought it at high cost” Abu Kalam, a vendor at city’s Gulishtan Turnaround said adding that the notes are drying out fast and he apprehend that customers will not get note in the coming days.

Mohammad Saklyen, a buyer who failed to buy several notes from street vendors has expressed his dissatisfaction saying that this year we will have to break our long tradition of paying ‘Eid Salami” to our relatives with new notes.
