Banks to operate on weekend ahead of elections

BM Desk:

In preparation for the upcoming national elections on January 7, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has announced on Thursday that banks will operate with limited service on both Friday, and Saturday. This decision comes following an instruction from the Election Commission (EC) to ensure smooth financial operations related to the polls.

Branches in Dhaka, Chattogram, other metropolitan cities, districts, and upazilas will be open for these two days. However, operations will be limited, with only essential services available. This is to facilitate cash withdrawals for the EC Secretariat, returning officers, and other election-related parties.

To ensure adequate personnel for these crucial withdrawals, BB has instructed banks to temporarily exempt officials assigned polling duties from their regular banking responsibilities. This step aims to avoid staff shortages while maintaining election-related financial activities.

This announcement serves to reassure voters and election officials regarding access to necessary financial services during the voting period. With banks operating on the weekend, the EC and its associated parties can proceed with cash flow operations smoothly, contributing to a well-managed and efficient election process.

This measure by BB reflects the importance of ensuring financial accessibility during the national elections and aims to contribute to a successful electoral process.
