Banks to Issue Cards Without Foreign Software

The Kona Card Personalization System (Kona-CPS) for Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has been successfully implemented by Kona Software Lab Limited, a provider of payment and security services.

As the inaugural client of Kona-CPS, Islami Bank will have the capability to issue EMV debit, credit, and prepaid cards under international schemes such as Visa, MasterCard, and UnionPay International, in addition to the local national card scheme ‘Taka Pay’, utilizing this state-of-the-art EMV card personalization system.

To commemorate this milestone in the nation’s payment and fintech landscape, an event was recently held at The Intercontinental Dhaka Hotel, attended by representatives from Bangladesh Bank, Islami Bank, and prominent industry leaders.

This marks the first time in Bangladesh that such an advanced and promising card personalization system has been introduced by the local software engineers at Kona Software Lab. This accomplishment is expected to lessen reliance on foreign aid, conserve time, and save foreign currency.

In this context, Siraj Siddiqui, Chief Business Officer of Kona, remarked, “With Kona-CPS, Kona Software Lab has demonstrated that Bangladesh is no longer merely a consumer of foreign technology. We are now developing world-class solutions through local innovation and support. We are hopeful about this achievement and believe that it will significantly influence the future of digital payments in the country.”

Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, congratulated Kona, Islami Bank, and other collaborators on the launch of Bangladesh’s first CPS, stating, “This achievement has brought us renewed hope and has contributed to establishing a solid foundation for a cashless Bangladesh.”

Mosharraf Hossain, Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Banking Wing at Islami Bank, highlighted the positive impact of Kona SL’s solution on their customer experience.

Building on this success, Kona Software Lab has plans to establish a card manufacturing facility and personalization bureau. Additionally, they have also taken up plans to launch their own card management system and internationally standardized tokenization services.

Kona Software Lab believes that these initiatives will further strengthen the payment ecosystem in Bangladesh, ensure digital card issuance in a secure manner, and enhance the ability of banks to provide modern payment services.

Kona Software Lab is working to provide complete technology solutions to several digital platforms in Bangladesh, including NexaPay, Nagad, and Rainbow.
