B Mirror Report: The government will review the trade agreement signed with the United States before making any decision on cancellation, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
Speaking on the issue, Zahed said the agreement contains a provision allowing either side to cancel it with a 60-day notice. However, he stressed that the government is currently prioritising a review process rather than moving directly toward termination.
“If we look at the agreement, there is an option to cancel it with a 60-day notice. But there is also a provision allowing both countries to modify different parts of the agreement through discussions,” he said.
He added that, from his perspective, the government should first conduct a thorough review of the agreement.
Zahed said public discussions surrounding the deal, including newspaper columns and video commentaries highlighting potentially problematic aspects, should continue.
He also confirmed that the matter has already been discussed with the Prime Minister.
“We are reviewing the agreement within the government. It is a very strong agreement and we understand the impact of cancelling it, as well as the circumstances under which it was signed,” he said.
According to the adviser, the government may seek to renegotiate provisions considered harmful to the country’s interests.
“We can consider revisiting certain problematic areas that may be harmful to the state. We would like to enter negotiations with them. Cancelling the agreement outright could create complications in bilateral relations or lead to reciprocal tariffs,” he added.
Responding to another question, Zahed noted that international arrangements vary in nature, including contracts and memorandums of understanding (MoUs), with some carrying strict legal obligations.
“In many cases, the legal bindings are so strong that leaving an agreement can be more harmful than remaining within it,” he said.
He further noted that a democratically elected government must consider multiple factors before making such decisions.
