Bangladesh to Import Wheat, Rice for Tk 1,044cr

The government has decided to import 220,000 metric tons of wheat from the United States under the G2G (government-to-government) method. Additionally, it will import 50,000 metric tons of parboiled rice from India through international open tender. The total cost for importing this wheat and rice will be Tk 1,044.41 crore (1,044 crore 41 lakh 67 thousand 300).

The approval for these imports was given on Tuesday (October 7) during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, held at the Cabinet Division’s conference room in the Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

According to meeting sources, based on a proposal from the Ministry of Food, the committee approved the procurement of 50,000 metric tons of non-Basmati parboiled rice under Package-1 through an international open tender for the fiscal year 2025-26.

This rice will be imported from M/S Bogadhia Brothers Private Limited, India. The total cost of the rice procurement is estimated at Tk 219.09 crore. The price per metric ton has been set at USD 359.77.

In another proposal from the Ministry of Food, the government also approved the import of 220,000 metric tons of wheat from the United States under the G2G arrangement.

The wheat will be imported from Agrocrop International Private Limited, an authorized agent of US Wheat Associates. The cost for this wheat procurement is estimated at Tk 825.31 crore, with the price set at USD 308 per metric ton.
