Bangladesh moving toward self-reliant energy system: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that Bangladesh is steadily progressing toward clean energy, a green economy and a self-reliant energy system.

He made the remarks while addressing the inauguration of the “Renewable Solar Power On-Grid Rooftop” initiative at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Saturday morning.

The Prime Minister said the newly launched one-megawatt rooftop solar power system at the parliament complex is not only a power generation project but also a symbol of the country’s sustainable future.

He said the initiative demonstrates Bangladesh’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable development, adding that practical actions must reflect leadership alongside policy decisions.

Tarique Rahman noted that Bangladesh’s growing economy and industrial expansion are driving increased electricity demand, while the country remains highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels, erratic rainfall, cyclones and river erosion.

He stressed that transitioning to sustainable energy is now essential for both economic stability and national security, calling solar energy a key solution for the country’s future.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s strong solar potential, he said the country receives abundant solar radiation daily, and its rooftops, industrial zones and coastal areas offer significant opportunities for renewable energy expansion.

He also pointed out that the global cost of solar power has declined significantly over the past decade, making it both an environmentally and economically viable option.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the initiative at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban would inspire public and private institutions across the country to adopt renewable energy.

He added that collective efforts toward clean energy could help Bangladesh become a model for green and sustainable development.

The Speaker of Parliament formally inaugurated the rooftop solar project at the Prime Minister’s request.

Senior government officials, cabinet members, lawmakers and parliamentary staff were present at the ceremony.
