Bangladesh is observing the Great Victory Day today, 16 December, commemorating the nation’s independence achieved in 1971 through the nine-month War of Liberation. The day is being marked with state ceremonies, tributes to martyrs, and nationwide celebrations.

This year’s observance carries special significance as it comes amid a new political transition following last year’s mass uprising and the formation of an interim government. Announcements of the 13th National Parliamentary Election in February next year and a planned referendum on the July Charter have added fresh expectations for democratic reforms.

The President and Chief Adviser paid tribute to the martyrs at the National Memorial, while the armed forces held fly-pasts and special displays. Cultural programs, prayers, and Victory fairs are being held across the country, reflecting the nation’s renewed aspiration to build a democratic and reformed Bangladesh.
