Bangladesh aims for top spot in UN General Assembly presidency

B Mirror Desk : After nearly 40 years, Bangladesh is scheduled to run for UN General Assembly chair. The interim administration has nominated Md. Towhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Advisor, for this important position.

The diplomatic campaign and plan for the June 2026 elections have been finalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which would take place from September 2026 to September 2027, will be chaired by Hossain if elected.

Election preparations are finished, according to a senior Foreign Ministry official who asked to remain anonymous. The permanent secretary of Cyprus’s Foreign Ministry and Palestine’s permanent representative to the UN have also been nominated alongside Bangladesh’s candidate. After former Foreign Minister and Speaker of the National Assembly Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, who held the office in the 1980s, Hossain would be the second Bangladeshi to be elected president.
