Gas supply from Excelerate Energy’s floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali has been suspended again due to a shortage of LNG, raising concerns that Bangladesh’s ongoing gas crisis could worsen.
The terminal stopped supplying gas to the national grid around 3pm on Wednesday after LNG stocks ran out. It had resumed partial operations only four days earlier following a 25-day shutdown caused by a fire on July 21.
Sources said LNG supplies had been gradually reduced since Monday before the terminal was forced to shut completely.
Bangladesh had expected four LNG cargoes this month through direct purchases, but none had arrived as scheduled. A new cargo for Excelerate’s terminal may not arrive until August 23 or 24, potentially leaving the facility shut for several more days.
Excelerate’s terminal has a gas supply capacity of around 600 million cubic feet per day, while Summit’s terminal can supply about 500 million cubic feet daily.
LNG supplies to the national grid fell from 660 million cubic feet on Tuesday to 550 million cubic feet on Wednesday. The country’s total gas supply currently stands at around 2,180 million cubic feet per day.
The shortage is expected to affect power generation, industries and CNG filling stations, with supply disruptions already being reported in parts of Dhaka and elsewhere.
