BM Report:
A wave of joyous excitement washed over schools across Bangladesh on January 1st as the nation celebrated the annual Book Distribution Festival. Pre-primary and primary schoolchildren, numbering over 2 million, eagerly received their brand new textbooks for the year, marking a vibrant start to the new academic year.
The central ceremony in Dhaka, held at the National (Morning-Afternoon) Government Primary School in Mirpur, saw Primary and Mass Education Minister Mohammad Zakir Hossain grace the occasion as the chief guest. Ministry Secretary Farid Ahmed joined him as the special guest, while Primary Education Director General Shah Rezawan Hayat presided over the festivities.
In his address, Minister Hossain declared the new books a special New Year’s gift from the Prime Minister to the children. “These books are meant to inspire and motivate,” he affirmed, highlighting how the very scent of a new book ignites a child’s curiosity and sets their imagination ablaze. He fondly recalled the Prime Minister’s initiative, born from a deep understanding of this inherent love for learning in children, and how it has blossomed into the joyous Book Distribution Festival we witness today.
Secretary Ahmed emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping students for the challenges of the 4th Industrial Revolution. He unveiled plans for a “new education” that transcends rote memorization and unlocks the limitless potential within each child. This transformative approach, he explained, aims to cultivate curiosity, questioning, research, and independent thinking, building the leadership qualities of tomorrow.
Since 2010, the current government has prioritized providing high-quality, engaging textbooks to every student. Over 938 million textbooks have been distributed since then, ensuring equitable access to education across the country. Beginning in 2012, textbooks for Grades 1-5 were printed in full color on high-quality paper, featuring attractive covers and durable bindings, making them even more enticing for young learners. The curriculum itself has been continuously revised to reflect the realities of the modern world, ensuring its relevance for today’s students.
The festival’s true magic lies in the simultaneous celebrations happening across the nation. In every school, on this first day of the year, classrooms transform into vibrant hubs of anticipation and joy as students, teachers, parents, and local dignitaries gather to celebrate the power of knowledge.
The 2024 Book Distribution Festival saw textbooks reach the hands of a staggering 30,96,939 pre-primary students, 1,80,70,594 primary students, and 84,473 students from indigenous communities. This collective effort reflects the government’s dedication to nurturing a generation of well-equipped, curious learners who will shape the future of Bangladesh.
As the echoes of laughter and cheers fade from the classrooms, one thing remains certain: the spark ignited by these new books will continue to shine, illuminating the minds and dreams of millions of Bangladeshi children.
