The Prime Minister has directed a 10-point action plan to address the ongoing flood and landslide crisis in the Chattogram region, according to Mahdi Amin, adviser to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Amin said the government has taken swift humanitarian and administrative measures following days of heavy rainfall and flash floods that have left thousands of people stranded and caused widespread damage across the region.
He said the Prime Minister is personally monitoring the disaster situation and has instructed the Prime Minister’s Office to maintain regular communication with deputy commissioners, upazila executive officers, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant authorities to coordinate response efforts.
The government has also directed local administrations, elected representatives, and members of parliament to work together to conduct rescue operations, assess damages, and implement rehabilitation measures. Leaders and activists of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have also been instructed to actively support affected communities, regardless of political affiliation.
According to Amin, 1,057 cyclone and flood shelters have been opened across the Chattogram Division, where more than 12,000 people have taken refuge.
Under the government’s General Relief (GR) programme, Tk 215 million in financial assistance and 3,450 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated to the five worst-affected districts Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Bandarban.
The government has also ensured the supply of safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, healthcare services, baby food, and three daily meals in disaster-hit areas.
Security forces, including the military where necessary, have been deployed to assist rescue operations in hilly regions affected by floods and landslides.
The Prime Minister has also ordered local lawmakers and public representatives to visit affected areas, distribute relief, and deliver government assistance directly to victims.
Due to the worsening flood and landslide situation, Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations have been postponed in the affected areas.
Local administration officials have been instructed to visit the families of those killed or injured in the disaster, express condolences, and ensure necessary support.
Looking ahead, the government plans to raise the 47-kilometre Chattogram–Dohazari railway line by five feet to reduce future waterlogging risks. The tender process for the project has already begun. The government also plans to provide safe housing for residents living in areas vulnerable to landslides.
Amin expressed confidence that the government’s rapid response, coordinated efforts, and humanitarian initiatives would help mitigate the impact of the disaster, adding that the Prime Minister remains committed to supporting affected people throughout the crisis.
