Chattogram port welcomes another 30,000-tonne fuel ship

B Mirror Report:  A vessel transporting a total of 30,000 tonnes of fuel oil including 10,000 tonnes of diesel and 20,000 tonnes of jet fuel has docked at Chattogram port today.

Chattogram Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim confirmed that the ship, named ‘MT Gran Kuva’, arrived at the port on Thursday, March 26. The fuel was supplied by the Chinese company Unipec under an existing agreement. While global uncertainties have affected the supply schedule, this latest shipment is expected to ease pressure on domestic fuel reserves.

Yusuf Hossain Bhuiyan, Senior General Manager of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), stated that the tanker carries 20,000 tonnes of diesel and 10,000 tonnes of jet fuel. At present, the country has 200,000 tonnes of diesel in stock, and the newly arrived fuel will strengthen overall reserves. The diesel is earmarked for transportation and industrial use, while jet fuel will be distributed to airports nationwide.

This marks the ninth oil tanker to arrive in Bangladesh this month, with a total of 17 ships scheduled to deliver fuel in March.

BPC manages and imports five types of fuel oil, including diesel, petrol, octane, and jet fuel. Recent challenges in fuel management have been driven by global price hikes and supply delays, worsened by conflicts in the Middle East.

BPC Chairman Md. Rezanur Rahman confirmed that the tanker arrived on schedule this morning, ensuring that no fuel shortages are expected. Efforts are ongoing to secure alternative suppliers to maintain a steady supply.

Typically, BPC imports fuel via government-to-government (G2G) agreements and international tenders, handling an annual volume of 65–68 lakh tons. About 1.5 million tons of crude oil, mainly from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are imported, with 20 percent refined domestically and the remaining 80 percent imported as refined fuel from countries such as India, China, and Indonesia.
