Court Bars DNCC Administrator Azaz from Traveling Abroad

B Mirror Report:  A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz amid allegations of corruption.

Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the order following a petition by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Md Ashiqur Rahman, who is leading the investigation, court bench assistant Riaz Hossain confirmed.

The ACC petition alleges that Azaz is under investigation for abuse of power, corruption, bribery, and irregularities in multiple DNCC-related matters. The complaints cover the leasing of the Mirpur–Gabtoli cattle market, the e-rickshaw project, and the acquisition of Borak Tower/Hotel Sheraton.

Other allegations include irregularities in shop allocations at Banani Kitchen Market, construction and assignment of shops in Khilgaon Taltola Super Market’s parking area, the city corporation’s van service, and allocation of shops on footpaths, among other DNCC dealings.

The ACC stated that Azaz was previously served a notice to appear and record his statement but failed to comply. The petition noted, “Reliable sources indicate that Azaz may leave the country and abscond abroad. In the interest of a proper inquiry, it is necessary to prevent his foreign travel.”

The ACC had launched a preliminary investigation into the matter on November 27 last year. Azaz was appointed DNCC administrator for a one-year term by the interim government on February 12 last year, when Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain was overseeing local government.
