NBR Registers 131,000 New VAT Entities in December Drive

B Mirror Report : As part of a unique national VAT registration campaign, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) registered almost 131,000 new Value Added Tax (VAT) firms nationally in December. Under the subject “Register on Time, Pay VAT Correctly,” the program was implemented in conjunction with the celebration of VAT Day on December 10 and VAT Week from December 10 to 15, 2025. The tax authority set a goal to bring 100,000 previously unregistered enterprises into the VAT net between December 10 and December 31, 2025, as part of the campaign.

The 12 VAT Commission rate’s throughout the nation carried out ongoing campaigns and field surveys every day, including holidays, according to the NBR. Consequently, in December 2025, the authority registered 131,000 unregistered firms, surpassing its goal.
According to an NBR press release, there were 516,000 VAT-registered firms overall prior to the interim government taking office. The number has now increased to 775,000 with the most recent registrations.

The statement further emphasized that, in comparison to income tax and customs duty, VAT continues to be the biggest source of government revenue. VAT made up over 38% of total revenue in the previous fiscal year, suggesting a large opportunity for additional revenue growth through VAT base expansion.

The government changed the VAT law to lower the threshold from Tk 3 crore to Tk 50 lakh, making registration essential for companies with yearly turnovers over Tk 50 lakh.
Easy online VAT registration, online submission of collected VAT to the government treasury, electronic filing of VAT returns through the eVAT system, and automated refunds of excess VAT to taxpayers’ bank accounts are just a few of the measures the NBR has implemented to streamline VAT compliance. Additionally, simplified VAT return types are being created for small firms.

In order to properly establish an effective, online-based VAT system with the goal of creating a self-sufficient and prosperous Bangladesh, the NBR has called for ongoing collaboration from consumers, traders, industrialists, and the media.
