The price of onions has suddenly surged. Consumers say the price has risen significantly at the beginning of the season. Within just two to three days last week, the price increased by Tk 20–30 per kilogram. Onions are now selling for Tk 140 to Tk 150 per kg.
During a visit to several markets in the capital on Friday (5 December), traders said that the high price of old onions is due to a supply shortage. New onions are only just starting to arrive.
At various markets, small amounts of freshly harvested onions were seen. However, the quantity is still very limited. Onions with stems (new, fresh onions) are selling for Tk 70–80 per kg.
Meanwhile, vegetable prices have started to decline slightly. Sellers say that winter vegetable prices are falling as supply increases.
On the other hand, there has been considerable commotion in the market over soybean oil prices for the past two days. Traders have increased the price of bottled soybean oil by Tk 9 without government approval. Similarly, the price of a 5-liter bottle has been raised by Tk 43, and the 2-liter bottle by Tk 18.
