BGMEA Urges Quick Action on US Tariff Benefits

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has called for urgent clarification from the government and U.S. authorities regarding the new tariff benefits on garment exports to the United States. BGMEA President Mahmud Hassan Khan stressed the importance of timely action to ensure that Bangladeshi entrepreneurs can fully capitalize on the recently announced duty-free tariff concessions for U.S. cotton-based garments.

In a meeting held on November 4, 2025, at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Khan requested that the government provide clear guidance on how Bangladesh’s spinners and garment factories can benefit from the new incentives. The tariff reduction is available to garments that use at least 20% U.S. cotton, as part of an executive order issued by the U.S. government. This move aims to encourage the use of U.S. cotton in Bangladesh’s textile production.

“We need swift clarification from the U.S. administration so that our manufacturers can make preparations without delay,” Khan said. He noted that the new tariff reduction presents a huge opportunity for Bangladesh’s garment industry to become even more competitive in the international market.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of increasing U.S. cotton imports, which currently make up about 10% of Bangladesh’s total cotton imports. Khan suggested that with the right strategies and incentives, this could increase two to three times.

During the meeting, the U.S. delegation, led by representatives from Cotton USA, welcomed the proposals and committed to working closely with BGMEA to explore ways of expanding the use of U.S. cotton in Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector.

The delegation also raised concerns about trade documentation challenges in cotton exports to Bangladesh, seeking BGMEA’s assistance to resolve these issues. Khan assured them that the BGMEA would present these concerns to the Ministry of Commerce to facilitate smoother trade relations.

Additionally, the meeting explored possibilities for improving the logistics and infrastructure required to accelerate U.S. cotton imports, including the establishment of a warehouse in Bangladesh to reduce lead times.

In closing, both sides agreed to work together to ensure transparency and traceability of U.S. cotton use, while also enhancing cooperation to increase the efficiency and productivity of Bangladesh’s textile and garment factories. Both parties expressed their commitment to strengthening the economic partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, paving the way for greater mutual benefits in the future.
