First U.S. Wheat Shipment Arrives in Bangladesh

For the first time, the interim government of Bangladesh has started importing wheat from the United States under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement, following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the governments of the U.S. and Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Food stated in a press release that a total of 440,000 tons of wheat will be imported under this agreement. As the first shipment, a vessel carrying 56,959 tons of wheat arrived today (Saturday) at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port.

The ministry also said that sample testing of the wheat on the ship has already begun. The press release added that arrangements are being made to quickly unload the wheat after the completion of the sample tests. Of the 56,959 tons, 34,170 tons will be unloaded at Chittagong Port, while the remaining 22,789 tons will be unloaded at Mongla Port.
