BM Desk : The average per capita income in Dhaka stands at $5,163, almost double the national average of $2,820, according to the Economic Position Index (EPI) survey released by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on 25 October.
The quarterly survey, assessing the country’s economic activities, revealed that 46% of Bangladesh’s GDP is concentrated in Dhaka, which also accounts for 40% of national employment. The capital houses 32% of the urban population and 11.2% of the total population, making it one of the most densely populated cities in Asia. Dhaka also contributes 40% of the country’s total exports.
The survey highlighted corporate concentration in the manufacturing and garment sectors, with 55.8% of manufacturing controlled by 365 companies and 58.6% of the garment sector controlled by 214 organizations. Speakers at the event noted that nearly 80% of the national economy relies on the informal sector and called for inclusion of agriculture in future EPI surveys. They emphasized the need for data-driven policies to ensure sustainable development amid a rapidly changing economy.
