Patuakhali Correspondent: Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PSTU) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam said that the coast of Bangladesh is not only a geographical boundary, it is also a part of the nation’s lifeline. When agriculture and livestock are facing challenges due to the impact of climate change, proper application of veterinary science can be the basis of a sustainable and prosperous coastal economy. Protecting animal health, increasing productivity and providing services to farmers through joint initiatives of fisheries and livestock can ensure the progress of this sector.
He further said, this conference is not just an event, but the beginning of future directions. The livestock sector is not only one of the driving forces of food security, but also of the national economy. It is possible to ensure the sustainable development of the country through combating climate change, disease prevention, development of climate-tolerant breeds, food security and scientific research based on human values.
On Saturday (October 25), at the 7th Annual Scientific Conference of the Coastal Vet Society Bangladesh under the theme ‘Strengthening Coastal Resilience through Veterinary Interventions’ at the university’s TSC Conference Hall, the VC highlighted the effective role of veterinary science in protecting coastal biodiversity and livestock in his speech as the chief guest.
The conference was chaired by the Society’s President, Professor Dr. Md. Ahsanur Reza. Pro-Vice Chancellor of PBIPRB, Professor Dr. S. M. Hemayet Jahan, Treasurer Professor Md. Abdul Latif, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Iktiar Uddin, Dean of ANSVM Faculty Professor Dr. Khondaker Jahangir Alam, Barisal District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman and Executive Director of Grameen Jan Unnayan Sangstha Zakir Hossain, Member-Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Khalil, Senior Scientific Officer, FDIL Barisal were present.
After the welcoming speech by the conference organizing committee convener, Professor Dr. Mohammad Ruhul Amin, Professor Dr. Md. Mahbub Alam, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, presented the keynote address. He emphasized the importance of sustainable innovation and application of modern veterinary technology in livestock development in coastal areas.
The day-long event was attended by about 200 researchers, teachers and professionals from various universities, research institutes, Department of Livestock, non-governmental organizations and industries across the country. The conference presented research data and analysis through oral and poster presentations on various topics including animal health, food safety, production, antimicrobial resistance, vaccination and innovative research. During this time, new avenues for research and collaboration were opened up through the exchange of views among the participants.
The first scientific conference was organized at Patuakhali University of Science and Technology in collaboration with the PUBRI administration and various pharmaceutical companies. The conference marked a new commitment to the development of the coastal livestock sector through lively discussions, research presentations, and constructive exchange of views.
