The Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has said that the importance and necessity of quality statistics in measuring progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is immense.
He made this statement in a message given on Sunday (October 19), on the occasion of World Statistics Day and National Statistics Day, which are being observed on Monday (October 20).
Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, “I am pleased to know that, like other countries around the world, Bangladesh is also observing World Statistics Day this year. On October 20, 2025, World Statistics Day and National Statistics Day are being celebrated jointly. The theme for this year ‘Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone’ is highly relevant and significant in the current context.”
He further said that accurate and quality data plays a vital role not only in the formulation of government policies and plans but also in their effective implementation and evaluation.
The Chief Advisor stated that the interim government of Bangladesh has already undertaken several reform and modernization initiatives to transform the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) into a world-class institution. Once implemented, these initiatives will make the data collection, analysis, and dissemination processes more efficient, technology-driven, and aligned with international standards.
He said, “I firmly believe that universal access to data and the use of quality data will support the country’s democratic governance, transparency, and accountability, and will make development more people-centric.”
Dr. Yunus added that through the collective efforts of all policymakers, decision-makers, planners, researchers, statisticians, and data users in the country, we are working to ensure ‘quality statistics and data for everyone.’
Finally, the Chief Advisor wished complete success for all programs undertaken on the occasion of World Statistics Day and National Statistics Day.
