Human chain protesting attempted murder of farmer

Nazrul Rajbari Correspondent: A human chain and protest march took place to condemn the poisoning and attempted murder of farmer Obaidur Rahman (43) from Garakola village in the Narua union of Baliakandi upazila, Rajbari.

The event occurred on Tuesday (July 1) at approximately 12:45 pm in front of the Rajbari Press Club, organized by the villagers of Garakola and local residents.

During the event, the injured farmer’s daughter Sejuti, son Khalid, cousin Monirul Islam, and elder brother Iqbal Hossain addressed the crowd.

Following the human chain, a protest march was conducted, and a memorandum was presented to the Home Advisor via the Deputy Commissioner.

The speakers during the human chain stated that due to a family dispute, farmer Obaidur Rahman was lured to his in-laws’ residence on the night of June 27 and was poisoned in a premeditated manner. Subsequently, his wife Poli Begum, brother-in-law Musa Mondal, Harun Mondal, and several other relatives attempted to murder him by slashing his throat with sharp instruments. He required 17 stitches on his neck. The day after the incident, a case was lodged at Baliakandi Police Station against his wife Poli Begum, brother-in-law Md. Musa Mondal, and Md. Harun Mondal, along with his wife’s elder sister Md. Nazmun Nahar alias Asmani, sister-in-law Md. Babar Ali, and father-in-law Md. Abul Kalam Azad, yet no arrests have been made to date. Currently, individuals associated with the defendants are threatening and intimidating him in various ways to persuade him to withdraw the case. Those implicated in this incident and the accused must be apprehended immediately and face severe penalties.

The speakers further emphasized that the accused should be arrested without delay and subjected to exemplary punishment; otherwise, public anxiety will escalate, jeopardizing the safety of the victims.

Obaidur Rahman is presently receiving treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.On the other hand, in this incident, the people of Obaidur Rahman’s in-laws’ house claim that Obaidur Rahman is a gambler. He is addicted to gambling regularly. They believe that an attempt may have been made to kill him due to a dispute with the gamblers. They are trying to harass the people of the in-laws’ house by filing false cases due to a dispute with his wife. They demand the arrest of the real culprits after investigation.
