Imran Jhenaidah Correspondent : A distressed farmer conducted a press conference in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah, where he accused an assistant judge of attempting to unlawfully seize his land and misusing his authority.
Abdus Sobhan (50), the son of the late Mojammad from Baghdanga village in the Nepa union of the upazila, organized the press event at the Jhenaidah Press Club on Sunday afternoon. His elder son, Sabbir Hossain, presented a prepared statement during the conference. Sobhan’s younger son, Sayem, along with his nephew, Hasanul, were also present.
In his statement, Abdus Sobhan asserted that he has been cultivating a rice field in Baghranga Mouza, which he inherited from his ancestors, for an extended period. A borehole, installed 35 years ago, is located there, which irrigates his own four bighas of land as well as the fields of neighboring farmers. A significant portion of his family’s income relies on this borehole.
He accused Assistant Judge Salahuddin (currently stationed in Gopalganj) of abusing his judicial authority by attempting to forcibly build a road over the disputed land. When Sobhan objected, the Assistant Judge allegedly damaged the borehole’s motor and cut down nearby trees. Subsequently, he filed a false case against Sobhan for land-related crimes and extortion.
The complaint further details that Sobhan was arrested once during the holy month of Ramadan and again just before Eid-ul-Azha in connection with these cases. Although he was later released on bail, he experienced significant financial and emotional distress. He claims he is currently facing the threat of another arrest.
Abdus Sobhan mentioned that he could not attend court on the scheduled date of June 17 due to feelings of insecurity.
During the press conference, he called for a thorough investigation into the matter and urged the relevant authorities to intervene promptly, seeking justice. Attempts to contact Assistant Judge Salahuddin on his mobile phone for a response to the allegations were unsuccessful.
