Start Fund Bangladesh Launches Studies in Dhaka for Coastal Communities

B MirrorDesk: On 14 May 2025, Start Fund Bangladesh hosted a high-level event in Dhaka to launch two groundbreaking studies aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness for coastal communities. Held under the theme “Challenges to Opportunities: Understanding Economic Patterns and Early Warning Systems to Strengthen Disaster Risk Financing,” the event brought together humanitarian leaders, government officials, donors, and technical experts to discuss early action and locally led disaster responses.

The two key publications unveiled were “Early Warning Systems for Cyclone and Flood Risks in Bangladesh: A Country Overview” and “Household Economy Analysis (HEA): A Baseline for Cyclone Contingency Planning in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh.” These studies highlight the economic vulnerabilities of at-risk populations and offer strategic insights to support anticipatory action.

The event was graced by Rezwanur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Disaster Management, who emphasised the importance of inclusive research and robust early warning systems to reduce the economic burden on poor communities.

Special Guests included Netai Chandra Dey Sarker (Director MIM), Md. Momenul Islam (Director, BMD), and Ahmadul Haque (Additional Secretary, Cyclone Preparedness Programme).

Representing the global Start Network, Anna Farina, Head of CARF, stressed the need for improved coordination among stakeholders to ensure timely and impactful disaster responses.
