First-ever civil surgeon conference, Chief Advisor to be present

B Mirror Desk : The inaugural Civil Surgeons Conference has been convened to transform the nation’s healthcare system. This two-day event will be opened by Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The conference’s working sessions will take place at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Center, adjacent to Hotel Intercontinental, and will be led by advisors, secretaries, and senior officials from various health ministries. It has been reported that 11 working sessions involving 13 ministries will occur, focusing on open discussions regarding the challenges and advancements in the health sector.

According to sources from the Health Ministry, an annual DC conference is typically held with 64 district administrators to address various district issues. This inaugural Civil Surgeons Conference is modeled after that format, specifically involving health administrators from all 64 districts. Prior to the conference, civil surgeons were instructed to submit their challenges and issues in service delivery, which they have communicated to the ministry.

Additionally, two civil surgeons will present health-related concerns to the chief advisor during the opening ceremony. A core committee and seven subcommittees have been established to ensure the conference runs effectively. Health Ministry officials have noted that while this conference is relatively small, it draws inspiration from the DC conference theme, as requested by the Health Advisor. The discussions will focus on public dissatisfaction with the healthcare system and various related issues, aiming to highlight strategies for reorganizing the health sector.

Sources from the Health Ministry indicate that the conference will provide a platform for making informed policy decisions grounded in practical experience. Stakeholders believe this will enhance the healthcare framework within the district.

Additionally, the conference will address civil surgeons’ perspectives on issues such as child marriage prevention, rural healthcare access, vaccination efforts, workforce shortages, infrastructure challenges, and the need for transparency and accountability in budget distribution. Civil surgeons have also proposed reforms for upazila health, solutions for doctor shortages, and improvements in transportation and ambulance services. Furthermore, there will be discussions on increasing bed capacity in various district hospitals.
