B Mirror Desk : Participants in a recent discussion emphasized that microenterprises have the potential to serve as a significant driver of inclusive growth in Bangladesh, contingent upon the implementation of appropriate policies, social awareness, and support systems.
The event, titled ‘Small Ventures, Big Future: Microenterprise as Engine of Inclusive Growth in Bangladesh,’ took place at the PKSF Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday. Economist Dr. Selim Jahan noted that while microfinance plays a role in enterprise development, it should not be conflated with the broader concept of microenterprise growth.
He stated, ‘For genuine development, we must eradicate opportunity inequality, ensure the active involvement of marginalized communities, and cultivate a mindset that empowers individuals to aspire and achieve their goals.’ Dr. Jahan, a former director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), stressed that mere infrastructural growth does not equate to true development. He pointed out that while enrolling children in schools is a step forward, providing quality education and access for disadvantaged groups is what constitutes real development.
He also advocated for creating a supportive environment by reducing violence and crime, implementing suitable policies, and ensuring sufficient resource allocation. ‘We must all raise our voices to keep the government positively engaged in this process,’ he urged. PKSF Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan, who presided over the event, highlighted the organization’s accomplishments, including international recognition for its projects. He noted that one of PKSF’s initiatives was recently showcased at a World Bank conference in Saudi Arabia, and another was recognized as one of the best projects globally supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). ‘These accolades have improved the country’s standing on the international stage,’ he remarked. In his opening address, PKSF Managing Director Md Fazlul Quader mentioned that the organization is currently supporting approximately 4 million microenterprises throughout the nation.
We offer a variety of services aimed at enhancing value chain development and facilitating the production and marketing of certified value-added products through financial support, technical assistance, and technology transfer,” he stated. He further mentioned that PKSF is working on expanding its enterprise development programs to enable microenterprises to play a significant role in promoting inclusive economic growth. PKSF Executive Director Dr. Mustafa K. Mujeri, BIDS Research Director Dr. Kazi Iqbal, and MRA Executive Director Mohammad Yakub Hossain, among others, addressed the gathering.
