Summit cancels second LNG terminal deal

Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) has canceled the construction contract for Summit Group’s second liquefied natural gas (LNG) conversion terminal at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.

In an order signed by Petrobangla Secretary Ruchira Islam on Monday (07 October), an order was issued to cancel the special law agreement with Summit Group.

It is known that Petrobangla and Summit Group signed the contract on March 30 of this year under the special law without any tender. On the same day, besides construction of the terminal, an agreement was also made to supply one and a half million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per annum by the end of 2026.

Of the two LNG terminals that currently exist at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar, one is Summit. The contract signed to build another new terminal there was known as the third terminal in Bangladesh and the second terminal owned by Summit Group.

The government has recently seized the bank accounts of Aziz Khan and his family members due to various irregularities and corruption.
