Shortage of dry food and medicines, increased prices.

Relief activities have been started by various organizations, societies, university students, private institutions and individuals to help the flood victims due to the sudden flood in Noakhali. As a result, food shortage has occurred in most of the wholesale shops in Noakhali. Sales of essential products including dry food have increased. Due to the huge demand in the market for food aid to the flood victims, the price has also increased.

 

Noakhali market was visited yesterday Sunday morning, but there is a demand of buyers in the market for chira, muri, bottled water, candles, water purification tablets, food saline and essential medicines.

Meanwhile, due to increased demand, the price of chira rose to Tk 67 per kg at the wholesale level. The price of cloth has increased by Tk 45 per kg. The price of a dozen candles has increased by more than Rs. However, most of the stores do not match the product. Meanwhile, various shopkeepers are keeping the gas cylinder price from Tk 1,350 to Tk 2,100 to Tk 2,000.

A customer named Bikash Das expressed his anger and said that the gas cylinder which I used to buy for 1 thousand 350 taka, but now we have bought it for 2 thousand 100 to 2 thousand 200 taka. Taking advantage of the flood, they increased the price.

If you look around the market, rice, dal, oil, onion are easily available in the market, but the dry food supplied by flood is not found in most of the wholesale shops. The few shops where found are selling them at higher prices. It can be seen that 70 taka clothes are being sold for 90 taka, 60 taka chira is 80 taka, a dozen candles of 60 taka are being sold for 120 taka, 1 thousand 350 taka gas cylinders are being sold for 2 thousand 100 to 2 thousand 200 taka.

A few drugstores are visited, there is a shortage of essential medicines including food saline, medicine for stomach problems, medicine for skin diseases and senora for girls. However, the price did not increase.

In this regard, a medicine shopkeeper said, during the rainy season, the sale of saline food is usually low, so it has been kept low. And meanwhile Senora national products are raised less, due to sudden increase in sales, there has been some crisis.

When we spoke to District Consumer Rights Director Kausar Mia, he said, “We have raided some shops and fined them in the past.” I have fined a few shops today. Fined a few shops but warned them for production in most shops. Talking about the gas cylinder, he said, we have an operation in this regard.

When talking to Deputy Commissioner Dewan Mahabubur Rahman about this, he said, we have heard about these issues. Consumer rights and magistrates are already working on the matter. Necessary measures are being taken to ensure that no one can raise the prices.
