Dhaka, the bustling capital of Bangladesh, is set to witness a significant transformation as the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) embarks on a groundbreaking project aimed at elevating the city’s green spaces and aesthetics. This initiative, titled  “Restoration and Creation of Aesthetic Environment for Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Kalungar Canals,” promises to not only beautify the cityscape but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for Dhaka’s residents.

The project centers around the extensive planting of trees along the banks of four major canals: Shyampur, Jirani, Manda, and Kalungar. With a total length of 39.6 kilometers on both sides, this large-scale plantation effort signifies a serious commitment from the DSCC towards achieving international standards for urban greening.

During the inauguration ceremony held on Wednesday near Shapla Bridge in Mugda, DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas acknowledged the current shortcomings. “We are aware that Dhaka’s greening initiatives haven’t yet met the international benchmarks,” he admitted. However, he expressed confidence that this project would be a game-changer. “Through planting approximately 35,000 trees along the banks of the Manda Canal itself, we aim to create a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing environment,” he explained. “This, along with similar efforts on the other canals, will significantly accelerate Dhaka’s journey towards becoming a greener and more sustainable city.”

The focus isn’t solely on aesthetics. The project is designed to deliver a multitude of benefits for Dhaka’s residents. The extensive tree cover will provide much-needed shade, improve air quality, and help regulate temperatures within the city.  The creation of dedicated bike lanes along the canals will promote a more eco-friendly mode of transportation, while the construction of pedestrian bridges and walkways will encourage walking and enhance connectivity.

Looking ahead, Mayor Tapas projected a timeline for visible improvements. “The Manda Canal, being the largest at 8.7 kilometers, will undergo the most extensive restoration,” he elaborated. “Restoration and beautification work here is expected to be completed by December of this year. By June 2025, Dhaka residents can expect a dramatic change along the entire canal network.”  This ambitious timeframe reflects the dedication of the DSCC and its commitment to delivering a swift transformation.

The project carries a substantial price tag of Tk 898 crore and 73 lakh, signifying the significant investment the DSCC is making in this endeavor.  Out of this budget, Tk. 397 crore is specifically allocated for the restoration and beautification of the Manda Canal.  The project scope encompasses a wide range of activities beyond tree planting.  This includes essential groundwork such as land development and the removal of waste and silt from the canals.

The aesthetic enhancements planned are truly impressive. The project envisions the construction of three amphitheaters, perfect for hosting open-air events and fostering community engagement.  Exercise sheds, fountains, and walkways will create inviting spaces for residents to relax and engage in physical activity. The construction of ghats will provide designated areas for religious ceremonies, while the addition of 32 pedestrian bridges and six vehicular bridges will significantly improve accessibility and traffic flow in the canal vicinities.

Thinking beyond leisure, the project incorporates the construction of children’s play areas, food courts, and coffee shops, transforming the canal banks into vibrant community hubs.  For added convenience, seating benches will be installed along the walkways.  Public toilets will also be constructed to ensure sanitation and hygiene.  The project acknowledges the safety and security concerns of residents, and slope protection and scenic fencing are included in the plans.  Most importantly, the project prioritizes sustainability with the construction of RCC retaining walls, which will effectively prevent erosion and safeguard the integrity of the canals for years to come.

The inauguration of the Postgola National Crematorium development work marked the conclusion of the event. The ceremony was a testament to the DSCC’s commitment to multi-faceted urban development, encompassing not just environmental initiatives but also essential public services.  The presence of prominent figures like DSCC Chief Executive Officer Mizanur Rahman, Secretary Akramuzzaman, and local dignitaries highlighted the collaborative effort driving this ambitious project forward.
