7.8 million new poor people in the country due to inflation

Due to the pressure of continuous inflation, the real income of the people has decreased in the last two years. Which has pushed at least 7.8 million people towards poverty, of which 3.8 million people have become extremely poor. This information has emerged in a research report by Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID).

The organization’s chairman Dr. MA Razzak presented the report at a workshop organized at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

He said that the number of poor people is increasing due to the pressure of continuous inflation. In the last two years, 7.86 million people have newly fallen below the poverty line. Of these, 3.8 million people have fallen from poor to extremely poor category. In addition, 9.83 million people are at risk of falling below the extreme poverty line.

Dr. MA Razzak said that inflation has increased due to the wrong policies, corruption and irregularities of the Awami League government. Moreover, inflation has also increased due to the excess supply of money.

Virtually joining the event, the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said in his speech as the chief guest, “During the Awami League government, various economic data were exaggerated. The real data of inflation was understated instead of being shown. During the current interim government, accurate data is being published in all sectors. However, now when it comes to showing the real data, inflation is reaching 13 percent. There is criticism that we are not able to reduce inflation. We want to make it clear that we will not exaggerate any data. What is there will be shown.

Shafiqul Alam said that the government has not yet taken any decision on LDC graduation. The profit or loss of LDC graduation is being analyzed. We will go towards what will be most beneficial. No decision has been made on whether to request to postpone graduation.”

Also present at the workshop were RAPID Executive Director M. Abu Yusuf and Research Director Dr. Mohammad Deen Islam.
