We Must Develop the Chittagong Hill Tracts — Supradip Chakma

On September 16, 2025, Supradip Chakma, Advisor to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, emphasized that the development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) is a responsibility that must be fulfilled. Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Development Thoughts for the Chittagong Hill Tracts” held at the CHT Complex in Bailey Road, Dhaka, he stated that good governance is essential for progress and asserted that development remains incomplete without the empowerment of women.

In his speech, Supradip Chakma stressed the importance of implementing empowerment initiatives from every level of society. He called for active participation of women in development activities and highlighted the need to prioritize women as entrepreneurs. He also announced that 40% of the total allocation for livelihood development in the CHT will be spent, and emphasized the proper and transparent use of project funds.

The advisor further informed that funds have been allocated to modernize 200 schools in the region, with initiatives underway to establish multimedia classrooms, develop digital content, and strengthen networking infrastructure. Expressing a long-term vision for education in the hill tracts, he showed interest in setting up campuses of Dhaka University, the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), and BUET in the region.

The seminar featured group discussions on sustainable development strategies in the CHT, including agriculture-based livelihoods, quality education, and skill development. Secretary Md. Abdul Khaleque presided over the session, while the keynote paper was presented by Dr. Md. Mohabbat Ullah, who emphasized the importance of advanced crop varieties suited to the region, sustainable land use, rainwater harvesting, and integrated agricultural systems.

Stakeholders attending the seminar welcomed the ministry’s initiative and contributed their insights on the future of development in the CHT. Ministry officials assured that these inputs would be considered in formulating upcoming development plans.

Among the notable participants were King Mong Raja Saching; Sudatta Chakma, Chairman of the Task Force on Tribal Refugee Affairs; Aminul Islam, Chairman of NTRCA; Additional Secretary Md. Monirul Islam; K.S. Mong, Member of the CHT Regional Council; the Chairmen of Rangamati and Bandarban Hill District Councils; the Deputy Commissioners of the three hill districts; leaders of local press clubs; and officials from the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
