BM Desk : Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur has stated that finding skilled Managing Directors (MDs) for banks has become a major challenge in the country’s banking sector. He made the remarks on Saturday, October 4, while speaking as the chief guest at an event celebrating the 15th anniversary of Financial Excellence Limited, held at the ballroom of The Westin Hotel in Dhaka.

“Finding high-quality MDs is now a serious problem,” the Governor said. “Even locating competent Heads of Departments is becoming increasingly difficult—whether it’s in the corporate or consumer banking segments, the shortage of skilled personnel is evident everywhere.”

He further added, “We are not getting MDs with proper knowledge and training. This is a kind of failure within the banking sector, and it means the challenges we face going forward will only grow.”

On the topic of digital banking, the Governor pointed out that while the country is advancing toward digital banking and modern governance, there remains a significant lack of skilled professionals in every sector. He noted that most banks in Bangladesh are still reliant on Indian core banking software, as the country has yet to develop its own domestic solutions.

Also present at the event, economist and former financial advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed emphasized the importance of the right mindset, stating, “Mindset is a crucial issue. Sometimes, trained individuals who are not mentally prepared can do more harm than untrained staff. We are facing very big challenges in the next four to five months.”

Speakers at the event stressed the need for developing skilled human resources, promoting technology-driven banking, and establishing strong governance practices in the sector.
