BM Desk: The government is set to reduce the number of mobile SIM cards that can be registered under a single National Identity Card (NID) ahead of the upcoming national elections, Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced today.
Speaking to reporters after the 15th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order at the Home Ministry, the Home Adviser said that the current limit of 15 SIMs per NID will be brought down to 10 after this month, with further reductions expected before the elections.
“The decision aims to curb criminal activities committed using SIM cards registered under other people’s names, which makes it difficult to identify actual offenders,” Chowdhury explained.
“To prevent misuse and enhance security, we are reducing the number of SIM cards that can be registered under one person’s name,” he added.
Addressing concerns about a level playing field ahead of the national polls, the Home Adviser said that no political party had raised any objections regarding the issue so far.
He further assured that recruitment and postings in law enforcement agencies have been made transparently, emphasizing the government’s commitment to holding free, fair, and credible elections.
The briefing was attended by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud.
