BM Desk:

The 29th death anniversary of world-renowned painter SM Sultan is on October 10, 2023. On the occasion, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy arranged a two-day art exhibition with an art camp, children’s letter-writing, Palagan, puppet show, and discussion.

On Monday, the 1st day of the 2-day-long event, a wreath was placed on the temporary altar in the portrait of artist SM Sultan in the Jatiya Chitrasala Bhavan of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. After that, the exhibition was officially inaugurated with the artworks of the artist, including his notable children’s paintings of Children’s Heaven. Director General of the Academy, Liaquat Ali Lucky, inaugurated it as the chief guest. Later, he visited the gallery with the children. The exhibition will run from October 9–17, 2023.

Academy’s DG, Mr. Liaquat Ali Lucky, said, ‘We always find our place of pride and glory; those places have been created by great artists like artist SM Sultan. We have to cherish and practice those places of glory. No one else saw the nature of rural Bengal, the rural society, the way he saw the peasants”.

Director of the fine art department, Syeda Mahbooba Karim, said, ‘Artist SM Sultan did not paint on the canvas we usually paint on. He used to make canvases using grameen chaat in a special process and used to paint pictures. He used to make colors himself; he used to make colors with soil, tree bark, and leaves.

She also said, ‘Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy organizes various events every year to keep him in our hearts. By organizing this event, we remember him more and more.’

The secretary of the academy, Salah Uddin Ahmed, also spoke in the discussion. The Academy’s Shishu Sangeet Band performed group music at the beginning and end of the discussion. Later, the documentary ‘Adam Surat’ presented by artist SM Sultan was shown.
