BM Desk:
According to the Fisheries Conservation Act, hilsa fishing is prohibited in certain coastal areas of the country during the full breeding season. For the purpose of preserving the breeding area, from October 12 to November 2, 2023, collection, transportation, stockpiling, marketing, and buying and selling of hilsa will be prohibited throughout the country.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard has undertaken various activities to effectively conduct the “Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2023.” In order to increase public awareness in the areas under the responsibility of the Coast Guard, various campaigns are being carried out, including leaflet distribution, postering, miking, and public awareness discussions.
The Coast Guard is conducting various operations individually and jointly through the necessary coordination with the related organizations. 5 bases of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, 28 small and big ships, and 65 permanent and 2 temporary contingent members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard are always engaged in patrolling in different rivers of the country through hundreds of watercraft under the management of “Ma Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2023.”
BCG stated that they will continue to conduct regular operations to control law and order, suppress robbery, and ensure public safety in the areas covered by the Coast Guard, as well as illegal fishing, killing baby hilsa, and protecting mother hilsa.
