Government to Purchase Fertilizer Worth Tk 1,847 Crore

The government will procure 230,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer from Saudi Arabia, Canada, and China at a total cost of Tk 1,847.39 crore. The purchase includes 160,000 metric tonnes of DAP, 40,000 tonnes of MOP, and 30,000 tonnes of urea.

The proposal was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held on Tuesday (October 7) at the Cabinet Division’s conference room in the Secretariat, chaired by Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

According to meeting sources, based on a proposal from the Ministry of Industries, the government approved the purchase of the third lot of 30,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea fertilizer from Saudi Arabia’s SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The cost for this lot is Tk 159.99 crore, with a price of USD 435.00 per metric tonne.

Based on a proposal from the Ministry of Agriculture, the government approved the purchase of the fourth lot of 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer from China’s Banyon International Trading Ltd., under a state-level agreement with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). The cost for this batch is Tk 376.38 crore, with a price of USD 768.75 per metric tonne.

Similarly, the government approved the procurement of the fifth lot of another 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer from the same Chinese company under the same agreement, again costing Tk 376.38 crore at the same per-tonne rate.

Additionally, the sixth lot of 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer under the same agreement and pricing was also approved at a cost of Tk 376.38 crore.

The tenth lot of 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer will be imported from Saudi Arabia’s Ma’aden company under a state-level agreement with BADC. This batch will cost Tk 383.84 crore, with a price of USD 784.00 per metric tonne.

Finally, under a state-level agreement between Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) and BADC, the eighth lot of 40,000 metric tonnes of MOP fertilizer will be imported from Canada, costing Tk 174.42 crore at USD 356.25 per metric tonne.
