DITF 2024 set to showcase economic progress and diversification efforts

BM Report:

The eagerly anticipated Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2024 is poised to kick off tomorrow at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Purbachal New Town, on the outskirts of the capital city. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the month-long fair.

Addressing a press conference on the eve of the 28th Dhaka International Trade Fair, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam highlighted the heightened vigilance measures to prevent fraud and protect visitors. The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) will conduct regular checks, and complaint boxes and help desks will be available for visitor convenience.

Ahsanul emphasized the fair’s symbolic entrance, designed like the Karnaphuli tunnel, showcasing the country’s development under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership. Notable attractions include a small replica of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and a representation of the third terminal of the airport.

The State Minister outlined the government’s commitment to diversify exportable items, reducing dependence on apparel. Jute and leather industries are receiving special attention, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives. The goal is to increase exports and achieve over $100 billion in export earnings by diversifying products.

Foreign participation is a key feature of this year’s fair, with 16 to 18 foreign pavilions, including representation from Turkey, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Iran, India, and Pakistan. E-commerce services will be accelerated to benefit people across the country.

Tapan Kanti Ghosh, senior secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, expressed optimism about the improved road infrastructure, expecting a significant increase in visitor turnout. Security concerns have been addressed with the outsourcing of 50 personnel, police and Ansar presence, and RAB on standby as a striking force.

AHM Ahsan, vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), assured the public of enhanced security measures and cleanliness, with 100 cleaners appointed for hygiene maintenance. Transport facilities, including buses from Farmgate, aim to ensure visitors’ convenience.

Various countries, including India, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Nepal, will participate in the trade fair. Local entrepreneurs will showcase textiles, machinery, carpets, cosmetics, electronics, jute products, leather goods, sports items, and more.

As the fair gears up to open its doors, anticipation is high for a successful event, fostering international partnerships and highlighting Bangladesh’s economic achievements.
