Dhaka University awards ‘Doctor of Laws’ degree to Bangabandhu in Special Convocation

BM Desk:

The University of Dhaka awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws (posthumously) to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In a special convocation. His daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, received the ‘Doctor of Laws’ degree on Bangabandhu’s behalf.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the special convocation ceremony organized at the DU playground on Sunday. Sheikh Hasina urged everyone to continue the progress of the country. She said, “Bangladesh has to advance through everything possible, including modern knowledge and science, and the progress of Bangladesh should not be stopped.”

The Prime Minister said, “You should not forget village people; after learning education, they should not be neglected, because the more they improve, the more the country will improve. Progress must be inclusive, not the progress of a small part of the country. This development should come from the grassroots.

Sheikh Hasina also said, “When Bangabandhu was expelled for demanding the rights of the fourth-class employees of Dhaka University, many student leaders were expelled along with him. However, Bangabandhu did not do so, even though many returned their studentship with bonds and fines. He said that giving bonds and fines means accepting wrongful accusations. As a result, he was expelled from the university.

“After his expulsion, my grandfather asked him to go to the UK and study barristership. But he chose to remain here to fight for the rights of the people of this country. Although he was a law student, he could not complete his law studies while struggling for the nation. Sometimes he used to joke that the Pakistanis had filed so many cases against him that he learned all the laws just to deal with them.

Bangabandhu’s daughter thanked the Dhaka University administration for returning Bangabandhu’s studentship in 2010 and awarding him a Doctor of Law degree in 2023.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Akhtaruzzaman expressed sincere thanks to the participants of the convocation and all those involved in organizing the convocation ceremony for the successful completion of the special convocation of the university in a smooth, orderly, joyous, and festive atmosphere.

Minister of Education Dipu Moni spoke as a special guest. Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), and Prof. Muhammad Samad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration), read the convocation citations. Treasurer Professor Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed expressed his thanks. The program was conducted by Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarkar.
