Coast Guard seizes smuggled Indian sarees, cosmetics in Narayanganj

BM Report:

The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a large quantity of smuggled Indian sarees and cosmetics in Narayanganj district on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Bangladesh Coast Guard, the seizure was made following a tip-off that a courier service van carrying smuggled cosmetics and sarees from India through the Benapole border in Jessore would be entering Dhaka through the Dhaleshwari Bridge toll plaza in Munshiganj district on Wednesday night.

A Coast Guard team led by Station Commander Lieutenant Kazi Akib Arafat from the BCG Station Pagallo in Dhaka went to the Dhaleshwari Bridge toll plaza area at around 10:35 pm on Wednesday. At around 4:40 am on Thursday, the team spotted a suspicious covered van carrying parcels from SA Paribahan. The van ignored the Coast Guard’s signal to stop and sped away.

The Coast Guard team chased the van and stopped it at around 5:45 am near the Buriganga River shore, 200 yards from the Pagallo market under the Coast Guard’s jurisdiction. Two men, identified as Delwar Hossain, 56, and Jewel Matabbar, 26, were arrested from the van.

The seized van, bearing the registration number Dhaka Metro-U 14-0798, was found to be carrying a large quantity of smuggled goods, including 1,488 pieces of sarees, clothes, bed sheets, shirts, and blazers, 5,571 pieces of cosmetics, 38 spools of thread, 40 headphones, eight mobile phones, and 120 mobile chargers.

The SA Paribahan representatives could not produce any valid documents for the smuggled goods. The Coast Guard seized the goods and handed them over to the Fatullah Model Police Station for further legal action.

This is the third time in recent months that the Coast Guard has seized smuggled goods from SA Paribahan vans. In November 2023 and December 2023, the Coast Guard also seized smuggled goods from two other SA Paribahan vans.
