Case filed against 44 individuals for vandalism and arson at Rupganj UP Office

BM Report:

In the aftermath of the attack, vandalism, and arson at Daudpur Union Parishad office in Rupganj, Narayanganj, a case has been formally filed against 44 implicated individuals. Notably, the two masterminds behind the incident were not named in the case statement, citing a threat of self-harm from the victim.

On the night of the incident, Union Parishad Chairman Nurul Islam, victimized by the attack, filed a complaint at the Rupganj police station on Wednesday. The confirmation of the case filing was provided by Rupganj Police Station OC Dipankar Chandra Saha on Thursday.

OC Dipankar Chandra Saha highlighted that the chairman of Daudpur Union filed the case, specifying the names of 44 individuals involved in the assault on the UP Parishad. While the case is under active investigation, no arrests have been made as of now.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the burning of at least five cars, including Chairman Nurul Islam’s vehicle. The chairman’s office witnessed the vandalism of photographs of Bangabandhu and the Prime Minister, with doors, windows, and AC units broken.

Attackers also looted government rice and blankets from the office’s godown, damaging CCTV equipment in the process. Approximately 20 people, including the chairman, sustained injuries, and the overall financial losses from the vandalism and arson amounted to over crores of Taka.

UP Chairman Nurul Islam alleged that the attack was orchestrated due to his support for independent candidate Shahjahan Bhuiya in the 12th Bangladesh election. Out of this resentment, mercenaries affiliated with Rangdhanu Group chairman Rafiqul and his brother Mizan reportedly carried out the assault.

Chairman Nurul Islam identified around 200 individuals, including Abdus Sattar, Rafiqul Islam, and Sohail, led by Rangdhanu group chairman Rafiq and Mizan, as perpetrators of the attack. The filed case explicitly mentions the names of these 44 individuals.

Zillur Rahman, the investigating officer of the case, disclosed that charges have been filed under relevant sections, encompassing illegal assembly, injury, assault, and arson. Further actions will be taken following the completion of the ongoing investigation.
