Beximco’s aggressive approach to ‘Go Global’ irks others.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made country’s oldest and smartest corporate house ‘Beximco’ more aggressive to catch up global health protective markets, industry insiders said.

Beximco exported 6.5 million PPE to a US Brand Hanes and received order for another 20 million from different government agencies of UK and Canada. It also set up manufacturing units for N95 mask expecting more orders from abroad. Beximco, however, launched production of Coronavirus drug Remdesivir and became a big supplier of protective equipments and other medicine to Bangladesh government, the company sources said.

Some of the country’s leading personal protective, mask and sanitizer producing companies’ CEO claimed that Beximco has been trying to influence country’s overall health system so that they can get priority in government offices.

“ Some government officials are working as like they are agent of Beximco at Director General of Health Service (DGHS), Director General of Drug Administration (DGDA) and Central Medical Store Depot (CMSD), which is unfortunate,” CEO of a PPE producing company alleged preferring anonymity.

Beximco executives claimed that the allegation is baseless as competitors are unable to compete with Beximco due to its having global exposure as well as pharma experiences.

Since spread of Coronavirus pandemic across the world, Beximco switched their business policy to engage all of its workforce and infrastructure from textile unit to personal protective manufacturing unit.

“We ensure all of our 40,000 workforce to remain active and engage them into new PPE units while most of the US companies cut their 85 percent workforce,” Syed Naved Husain, CEO, Textiles Unit of Beximco told Business Mirror.

Producing pharmaceuticals and protective equipment are different from other industries as it is hugely regulated market and very controlled in manner, Naved cited.

“Beximco is registered with US FDA, UK MHRA and Canadian Health Canada. We have already entered into 40 different countries with our drugs. We do have strong supply chain network for which Beximco PPE and Mask are getting good response from global market,” Syed Naved Husain said in a satisfied tone.

Beximco inked agreement with US Detroit to build a mask factory as demand of protective gear surges in the US, the nation with the most coronavirus cases.

The Dhaka-based conglomerate has started selling the generic version of Gilead Sciences Inc.’s antiviral drug this month in the South Asian nations, and will invest $20 million in the Detroit plant, said Syed Naved Husain. The company will also invest $30 million on a plant at home, he said.

Beximco’s textile unit is tapping new opportunities as luxury brands from New York to Paris scrap garment orders amid the pandemic. The company expects the Detroit plant to be ready in nine months, while the one in Bangladesh will start production from July, Husain said.

Setting its corporate mission “Taking Bangladesh to the World”, BEXIMCO has exponentially grown over the years. The flagship platform now has operations and investments in a wide array of industries including textiles, pharmaceuticals, PPE, ceramics, real estate development, construction, trading, marine food, information and communication technologies, media, DTH, financial services, and energy.

The Group sells its products and services in the domestic market as well as international markets. BEXIMCO is the largest employer in private sector of Bangladesh and employs over 70,000 people worldwide.

The Group consists of four publicly traded and seventeen privately held companies. The publicly traded companies are Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited, Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited, Shinepukur Ceramics Limited and Beximco Synthetics Limited. The total revenue of the group stands in excess of a Billion US Dollar per year.

BEXIMCO encompasses one of South Asia’s largest vertically integrated textile and garment companies. The Textile division is a fully integrated manufacturer of cotton and polyester blended garments for men, women and children, both for domestic and abroad markets. BEXIMCO is also the largest exporter of pharmaceuticals in Bangladesh with presence in 45 countries. The Pharmaceuticals division manufactures and sells generic pharmaceutical formulation products, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and intravenous (IV) fluids. The Group is also the largest ceramics exporter in Bangladesh.

State-of-the-art manufacturing plants located in the vicinity of Dhaka provide the Group with a highly cost effective manufacturing base. A majority of its plants are in the BEXIMCO Industrial Park, a vertically integrated self-contained facility. This facility provides ready access to captive power generation, water purification, liquid nitrogen, waste water treatment and other key infrastructure facilities. The Group’s global clients include some of the world’s best known brands including BT, Chevron, Calvin Klein, H&M, JC Penney, Macys, Zara, UNICEF, Royal Doulton and Villeroy & Boch.

In recent times BEXIMCO has launched its newest Vertical, the BEXIMCO PPE Division which is responsible for producing the highest grade of internationally certified PPE products for medical use
