BM Report:
In a sign of deepening economic ties, the Bhutanese ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Rinchen Kuentsyl, has commended the quality of Bangladeshi goods, highlighting the rising popularity of Bangladeshi processed food, electronics, and furniture brands in Bhutan.
Ambassador Kuentsyl specifically lauded the success of Pran’s food products, Walton’s electronics and home appliances, and Hatil furniture in establishing a strong reputation within the Bhutanese market. He suggested that further streamlining transit procedures could significantly enhance the demand for Bangladeshi products in Bhutan.
Responding to the Ambassador’s remarks, Bangladeshi Commerce State Minister Ahsanul Islam Titu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding the country’s export portfolio, echoing directives from the Prime Minister. He emphasized the existing robust trade relations between Bangladesh and Bhutan, expressing confidence in their further strengthening in the future. Currently, Bangladesh imports fruits and granite from Bhutan.
The Ambassador’s meeting with Minister Munshi comes on the heels of his discussions with Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, where the latter urged Bhutan to reconsider rejoining the BBIN initiative, a sub-regional effort aimed at fostering connectivity. Additionally, Foreign Minister Mahmud underscored the importance of finalizing the draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Thimphu to facilitate the import of hydropower from Bhutan to Bangladesh. He also proposed exploring the import of Jeeps manufactured by Pragati Industries in Bangladesh.
These developments signal a growing desire to bolster trade and economic ties between Bangladesh and Bhutan. Addressing logistical hurdles and exploring new avenues for collaboration hold immense potential for mutually beneficial outcomes for both nations.
