Islamic Foundation warns of impersonation scam

The Islamic Foundation has warned that a fraud ring is using the organization’s name and identity to collect personal and financial information from imams, khatibs, muezzins, and mosque management committee members across Bangladesh.

In a public notice issued on Saturday, the Foundation said the fraudsters have been contacting individuals through telephone calls, mobile phones, social media, and various online platforms. They reportedly seek sensitive information, including bank account details, mobile financial service account numbers, national identity card information, mobile phone numbers, and data related to mosque salaries and allowances.

The Foundation emphasized that neither its headquarters nor its district or upazila offices ever collect such information through unauthorized individuals or phone numbers. It cautioned that anyone requesting bank account details, one-time passwords (OTPs), PINs, mobile banking information, or other confidential data in exchange for financial assistance, honorariums, allowances, grants, or government benefits is likely attempting to commit fraud.

The organization urged all imams, khatibs, muezzins, mosque management committee members, and other concerned individuals to remain highly vigilant and refrain from sharing any personal or financial information with unknown callers or suspicious contacts.

It also advised the public to verify any request made in the name of the Islamic Foundation through its relevant district or upazila offices before providing information or money.

The Foundation further requested that any suspected fraud or suspicious communication be reported immediately to the nearest law enforcement agency and the appropriate Islamic Foundation authorities.

The Islamic Foundation noted that it has long been involved in mosque-based activities, imam training, religious education, and social development initiatives. It described the misuse of its name to deceive religious communities as regrettable and condemnable, and called for greater public awareness and cooperation to prevent such fraudulent activities.
