Bangladesh’s Parliament on Tuesday passed the Tk 938,000 crore national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year by voice vote. The budget will take effect from Wednesday, July 1.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury moved the budget approval proposal during a parliamentary session, which was subsequently endorsed by voice vote. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram presided over the session.
The newly approved budget is Tk 148,000 crore larger than the Tk 790,000 crore budget for the outgoing 2025-26 fiscal year, marking a significant increase in public expenditure.
Before the budget was passed, Parliament considered 59 expenditure demands submitted by various ministries and divisions. Lawmakers proposed a total of 1,344 cut motions against these demands. Following discussions, all cut motions were disposed of by voice vote.
The finance minister had presented the proposed budget in Parliament on June 11, after which members from the ruling party, opposition and independent benches took part in extensive discussions.
During the general debate, Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman described the budget as more than a government financial plan, calling it a “budget for national reconstruction.” He urged political unity to restore the economy, ease public hardship and strengthen discipline in the financial sector.
The prime minister said the new budget provides a roadmap for rebuilding Bangladesh’s economy on a stronger foundation. He added that the government aims to promote equitable development and accountable governance to prevent the recurrence of authoritarianism and fascism in the future.
