B Mirror Report: The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will begin a 10-day nationwide emergency truck sale of essential commodities from tomorrow to help stabilize market prices ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Under the initiative, 720 mobile trucks will be deployed across the country to sell subsidized daily necessities directly to consumers, according to a TCB press release. The programme will run from May 11 to May 21, excluding Fridays.

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir is scheduled to inaugurate the campaign in the Agargaon area of Dhaka on May 11.

Each truck is expected to serve around 400 consumers per day, with an estimated 28.80 lakh people benefiting from the initiative over the 10-day period. Unlike the regular TCB cardholder system, this special sale will be open to all consumers without requiring a permanent card.

A total of 13,939 metric tons of essential goods will be distributed under the programme. Consumers will be able to purchase edible oil at Tk 130 per litre (maximum two litres), sugar at Tk 80 per kg (one kg limit), and lentils at Tk 70 per kg (two kg limit).

For nationwide coverage, 50 trucks will operate in Dhaka and Dhaka district, 20 in Chattogram and its district, and 15 trucks each will be deployed in six divisional cities. The remaining 56 districts will each receive 10 trucks.

Officials said the initiative is designed as a supplementary measure alongside TCB’s regular subsidized distribution programme for low-income families. In May, around 72 lakh cardholder families are expected to receive 34,848 metric tons of essential goods under the existing system.

TCB confirmed that prices and allocation limits under the regular cardholder programme will remain unchanged.
