Bangladesh boosts multilateral cooperation through UNDP support

B Mirror Report: Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development by making a core (regular) resources contribution to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The annual contribution, provided as flexible funding, is considered vital for addressing increasingly complex global challenges and enabling swift responses during crises. According to a UNDP press release, Bangladesh continues to focus on inclusive growth, climate resilience, and effective governance priorities that closely align with UNDP’s global mission.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said Bangladesh remains committed to supporting the global development framework, including UNDP, a key partner since the country’s independence in 1971. He noted that the contribution reflects the new government’s dedication to advancing sustainable development both domestically and internationally, while also sharing Bangladesh’s development experience with countries across the Global South.

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Kanni Wignaraja, welcomed the contribution, describing it as a testament to the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and UNDP spanning over five decades. She added that Bangladesh’s continued support to multilateral efforts highlights its commitment to global sustainable development, particularly as the country progresses toward graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

The flexible core funding will support the implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plan in more than 170 countries and territories, ensuring resources reach areas where they are most needed. Such contributions also strengthen UNDP’s oversight and accountability mechanisms, helping ensure programmes are delivered efficiently, transparently, and effectively.
