Experts stress Shariah governance to boost bank transparency

B Mirror Report: Experts at a training workshop have underscored the importance of robust Shariah governance to ensure transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the banking sector.

The remarks were made at a three-day workshop titled “Shariah Governance for the Members of Shariah Supervisory Committee,” which began today at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in the capital, according to a press release.

The programme is jointly organised by Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management and Bangladesh Bank with the aim of strengthening the capacity of Shariah Supervisory Committee members working in Islamic banks and financial institutions.

Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Md Kabir Ahmed inaugurated the workshop as chief guest, while BIBM Director General Dr Md Ezazul Islam chaired the event. Professor Dr Abu Bakr Rafique, Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Board of Bangladesh Bank, attended as special guest. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Central Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh, was present as guest of honour.

In his speech, Dr Kabir Ahmed said effective Shariah governance is essential to ensure transparency, compliance, and integrity in Islamic banking operations. He added that a strong governance framework helps build trust among depositors and supports the sustainable growth of Islamic finance.

Dr Md Ezazul Islam reiterated BIBM’s commitment to promoting good governance and professional excellence in the banking sector through training, research, and knowledge sharing.

The workshop, scheduled from April 21 to 23, has brought together members of Shariah Supervisory Committees from various Islamic banks and financial institutions, the press release added.
