Govt plans further cut in Hajj costs as first flight departs

B Mirror Report: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said his government will make efforts to further reduce Hajj expenses from next year, aiming to ease the financial burden on Muslim devotees.

Speaking at the inauguration of this year’s first Hajj flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, he noted that airfare has already been reduced by Tk 12,000 per ticket this year. He expressed hope that costs could be lowered further next year to make the pilgrimage more affordable.

The Prime Minister said the government had limited scope to introduce major changes this year, as most preparations were completed before it assumed office, but added that efforts were made to provide as much relief as possible.

He urged pilgrims to pray for peace and prosperity in the country, as well as for the government to effectively address key challenges, including unemployment. He also wished them good health and a safe journey.

The first flight (BG3001), carrying 418 pilgrims, departed for Jeddah shortly after midnight following its formal inauguration late at night. The Prime Minister boarded the aircraft before departure, greeted pilgrims, and joined a prayer seeking successful completion of Hajj rituals.

Several ministers and the Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh were present at the event.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 14 flights are scheduled for the day. Pre-Hajj operations will continue until May 21, with a total of 207 flights planned.

Bangladesh is expected to send around 78,500 pilgrims this year, with the majority traveling under private arrangements. The Hajj is likely to take place on May 26, subject to moon sighting, while return flights will begin from May 30 and continue until July 1.
