QatarEnergy begins LNG supply to Bangladesh

B Mirror Report: QatarEnergy has started supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bangladesh under its second long-term sales and purchase agreement (SPA), following a similar move by US-based Excelerate Energy, officials said.

The first LNG cargo from QatarEnergy under the new agreement reached the floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) at Moheshkhali, operated by Excelerate Energy, and was successfully delivered during the week ending February 20–27, a senior Petrobangla official told Media.

The Qatari shipment carried around 138,000 cubic metres of LNG, marking the beginning of supply under the second long-term contract. However, QatarEnergy’s media department did not respond to requests for comment.

Bangladesh signed the 15-year LNG supply agreement with QatarEnergy on June 1, 2023, under which the Middle Eastern energy giant will supply up to 1.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of LNG starting from 2026. Under the deal, QatarEnergy will deliver 12 LNG cargoes in the first year, with the option to supply an additional 12 cargoes under specific conditions.

From 2027 through 2040, QatarEnergy will supply a confirmed 24 cargoes annually, equivalent to around 1.5 Mtpa of LNG, according to Petrobangla officials.

The latest supply follows the commencement of LNG deliveries by Excelerate Energy last month under a separate long-term contract. With these new agreements, Bangladesh is now importing LNG under four long-term SPAs. Previously, LNG was supplied under two separate deals by QatarEnergy since April 2018 and an Omani company since January 2019.

Officials said Bangladesh has reduced LNG imports from the spot market after securing new long-term supply contracts and due to limited re-gasification capacity. So far in 2026, Bangladesh has imported only two spot LNG cargoes, compared to 49 cargoes in 2025.

Currently, the country operates two FSRUs  Summit LNG and Excelerate Energy’s Excellence with a combined re-gasification capacity of around 7.5 Mtpa.

Bangladesh imports LNG under both long- and short-term agreements and also sources fuel from the spot market to meet rising natural gas demand, said a senior official of state-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL).

Since starting LNG imports in 2018, Bangladesh has imported around 35.39 million tonnes of LNG through 571 cargoes as of January 2026, according to RPGCL data.

Petrobangla data shows that the country’s total natural gas production currently stands at around 2,563 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), including 848 mmcfd from re-gasified LNG.
