E-return submissions exceed 3 million

B Mirror Desk :  Over 3 million people have filed their income tax returns online for the current 2025–2026 tax year. Approximately 4.5 million taxpayers have signed up for the e-return system thus far.  The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disseminated this information in a press release on Tuesday.

According to the NBR, since the introduction of the e-return system, it has become a major success in the digital transformation of tax administration. On 4 August, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the e-return submission process through the NBR website (www.etaxnbr.gov.bd). Since the inauguration, taxpayers have shown a strong response and have been submitting returns online at a rapid pace.

The NBR reported that the number of e-returns filed includes 251,784 taxpayers in August, 301,302 in September, 454,076 in October, 1,040,472 in November, and approximately 1 million taxpayers so far in December. During the same period last year, 1,002,298 taxpayers had filed e-returns. For the convenience of taxpayers, the government has already extended the return submission deadline to 31 January. The NBR expects that more than 4 million taxpayers will file e-returns within the extended deadline this year.

This year, through a special order, the NBR has made e-return filing mandatory for all individual taxpayers except senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically incapacitated persons, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

However, exempted taxpayers may also choose to submit their returns online if they wish. Through the e-return system, taxpayers can file returns from home by entering information on income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities without uploading any documents or papers. By paying taxes through debit/credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services (bKash, Nagad), taxpayers can instantly print the acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate. Taxpayers residing abroad can send the required information, including passport number, NID, and email address, to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd, after which an OTP and registration link are sent to their email.

Through this process, they can easily complete registration and submit their returns. To assist taxpayers, the NBR has launched a call center (09643 71 71 71), an online complaint facility, and e-return help desks in all tax zones. In addition, training on the e-return system has been provided to taxpayers, tax lawyers, CAs, CMAs, and chartered secretaries. The NBR has requested all individual taxpayers to submit their e-returns by 31 January.
